BAFTA Suspends Bryan Singer’s Bohemian Rhapsody Nomination Over Assault Allegations

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has announced that they have suspended Bryan Singer’s Bohemian Rhapsody nomination. BAFTA revealed that they were doing so after the latest string of sexual assault accusations against the director became public. Singer has been accused of having sex with underage boys numerous times since the late 1990s. Singer vehemently denies all of the accusations that have been leveled against him and says that the latest round have come from a ‘homophobic’ writer who is obsessed with him. The use of the word ‘homophobic’ did not set well with GLAAD.

Bohemian Rhapsody has become an awards season favorite, despite the fact that it wasn’t met with critical acclaim upon its release. However, the biopic has gone on to become the highest grossing music biopic in history, having earned $853.5 million globally, and is continuing to break records. With that being said, director Bryan Singer can’t seem to shake these latest sexual assault allegations. BAFTA had this to say about suspending Singer’s nomination in a statement.

“BAFTA considers the alleged behavior completely unacceptable and incompatible with its values. This has led to Mr. Singer’s suspended nomination. BAFTA notes Mr. Singer’s denial of the allegations. The suspension of his nomination will therefore remain in place until the outcome of the allegations has been resolved.”

Bryan Singer was fired from Bohemian Rhapsody with only weeks left to go on the production. The director knew that another set of sexual assault allegations was about to hit the news and his behavior on the set became erratic, if he showed up at all. Fox says that they fired him for being unprofessional. As for working with Singer in the first place, everybody claims that they did not know about the director’s past of allegedly molesting young boys.

Bohemian Rhapsody star Rami Malek has said that working with Bryan Singer was “unpleasant.” Malek and Singer reportedly did not get along at all while making the movie. However, when asked about prior accusations, Malek claims that he did not know about them. Queen guitarist Brian May says the same thing, which is really strange since half of Singer’s Wikipedia page is dedicated to over 20 years of sexual assault accusations.

Regardless, only Bryan Singer’s Bohemian Rhapsody BAFTA nomination has been suspended. The biopic is still nominated for Outstanding British Film, as well as six other BAFTA Awards, which will be held on February 10th in London. Bohemian Rhapsody will continue to go on and win awards, but at least people are finally starting to talk about Singer’s past. However, Singer is still attached to direct the upcoming Red Sonja movie. Millennium Chairman and producer Avi Lerner says that they are dismissing the allegations and focusing on the box office success of Bohemian Rhapsody as their decision for keeping the director on board. The BBC was the first to announce the Bryan Singer and BAFTA news.
