Pumpkinhead Remake Is Still On, Big News Expected Soon

Horror fans still have more Pumpkinhead to look forward to in their future, as a remake of the horror classic is still on the way. Back in 2016, it was reported that veteran horror producer Peter Block had obtained the rights to the franchise and intended to revive it for modern audiences. Developments have been few and far between in the years since. Now, however, Block assured that news is coming.

Peter Block is currently promoting the release of his new movie The Shed. During a recent interview, he was asked about the status of the Pumpkinhead remake. While the producer didn’t have any specific details or announcements to make at this time, he assured that the project is still moving forward, and that we should expect some news in the near future. Here’s what he had to say about it.

“We have some exciting news that I’m not allowed to share yet, but that should be making its way out soon. Pumpkinhead is a movie I just love, and it’s very similar in some ways to The Shed when you think about it. It’s about the pain you suffer vs. the revenge you seek, and that being even greater in some respects. And while the original Pumpkinhead is a great movie, I think that there is more that can be done with that idea.

Sometimes I loathe remakes and reboots because I don’t see the reason for them, but Pumpkinhead is one of those where I believe that the story and the themes of it are so good, but there’s also a way of updating it where less focus on the creature in the beginning will add to a lot of the suspense.”

Indeed, we are inundated with reboots and remakes right now, and the horror genre is certainly not immune to the growing trend. That said, it sounds like Peter Block has a great deal of reverence for the property and is looking to do it justice. We also get a small sense for his take on the project, which will apparently focus a little less on the titular creature, at least in the earlier parts of the movie.

At present, there is no word on who may end up in the director’s chair for the remake, nor is it clear who may be tapped to start. It also doesn’t sound like this will be a legacy sequel that connects it to earlier entries in the franchise, like 2018’s Halloween did, for example. This will, it would seem, be a full-blown remake. But we’ll have to wait until this currently mysterious news drops to speculate any further.

Pumpkinhead, directed by the legendary Stan Winston, was released in 1988 and starred Lance Henrikson (Aliens). It centers on a man who conjures a beast to enact revenge on those who took his son away from him. The movie was heralded for its use of practical effects and went on to become something of a cult classic. It spawned several sequels, the most recent being 2007’s Pumpkinhead 4: Blood Feud, which was released by SyFy in 2007. None of the sequels were released theatrically.
