Unused Infinity War Concept Art Shows a Much Different Ebony Maw

Original concept art for Infinity War featured a much different take on Ebony Maw. The epic team-up movie featured a ton of our favorite Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes and introduced us to some pretty intense villains with Thanos’ Black Order, who were on the hunt for the Infinity Stones. Out of the whole group, Ebony Maw was the most frightening. He wasn’t the largest or the ugliest, but he was the most calm and creepy of the whole bunch. Additionally, his voice added to his sinister vibe, rounding out the whole package.

Marvel Studios concept artist Jerad Marantz shared his original designs for Ebony Maw on social media. The face was a lot different than what ended up on the big screen, looking more human/zombie than creepy Squidward. The villain had a bit more hair on his head and his outfit was more shiny spaceman-style. His clothing was also pretty tight and form-fitting. Marantz’s version of Ebony Maw looks a little bit more like the comics mixed with how he ended up in the final cut of Infinity War.

In the end, it was Ryan Meinerding’s design that Marvel Studios chose to go with. Meinerding’s design is clearly closer to what the Russo Brothers had in mind when they were picturing Ebony Maw, who came out with more of a royal-looking space costume along with flatter features on his face. The final design shows off more of a thinning hair that makes the Black Order villain come off as looking a lot older than he does in the unused concept art. It’s always interesting to see how characters start looking in the development process and then what the final product ends up as.

Ebony Maw did not survive his encounter with Iron Man, Doctor Strange and Spider-Man, though he did almost kill Strange. It was Peter Parker’s idea that led to the villain’s death after getting sucked into space, which was an idea that Parker got from 1986’s Aliens. Though Ebony Maw’s screen time was cut short, he left a pretty big mark on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As to whether or not we will see him back for Avengers: Endgame, that remains to be a mystery.

If Ebony Maw and the rest of the Black Order return for Avengers: Endgame, it will make everything that much tougher for the Avengers. If some of the decimated heroes return, why can’t the Black Order? Again, this is all still a mystery and it will remain to be until the movie is released early next year. Some MCU fans probably wouldn’t mind see Ebony Maw backing up Thanos once more, while others are glad that he didn’t make it out of Infinity War alive. You can check out the original Ebony Maw design and see how much he changed below, thanks to Jerad Marantz’s Instagram account.
